17 Unexpected SEO Lessons I Learned After Publishing My First Listicle

17 Unexpected SEO Lessons It's been ten years since I started blogging. It began as a fun thing (and it still is!). Also, blogging was just another random stuff that I used to do at that time. But today my blog is much more than a random thing for me, and that's the only difference. I don't know if I'm one of the so-called professional blogger or a hobby blogger or yet another nerd. It's something that I'm trying to figure out. But I just know for sure that it's been a long amazing journey so far. :) And it didn't happen in one day and it didn't happen in a couple of years time. It happened over time and is something that's still happening. I don't know if you have read this blog post of mine:
Over 201 Google Products & Services You Probably Don’t Know
Well, you should. You know why? Because that's my first (original) evergreen blog post and apparently that's my first (real) listicle too. It eventually became one of my first pillar blog post and taught me a lot of things that I never thought of.

First things first. I didn't write Over 60 Google Products & Services You Probably Don’t Know (the original blog post --- thanks to Wayback Machine) for SEO. And I didn't write it for traffic either. I did it as I was using (or tried) almost all of Google's web products and services. So I just wanted to show my gratitude plus create a useful list as it wasn't there on any other blogs. Moreover, it was also just another random blog post that I did which happened to became the foundation of my blog's SEO. You know why? Because it taught me a lot of things about Google SEO that I couldn't find anywhere else. Oh yes, that post was published way back in 2009 when there was no Google Pandas or Penguins. Also, I didn't know any Neil Patels or Rand Fishkins of the SEO world. Back then I gathered most of my internet marketing knowledge from the Digital Point forum. Coming back... Here are the things that I learned about blogging and SEO from my favorite blog post --- let's call it "Google 101". Okay? So yeah, they are all more or less related to SEO Google SEO. :)

Over 501 Blogging Tools (Free & Premium) You’ll Ever Need

Blogging Tools 501 Bloggers can't live without tools! I mean, without their favorite blogging tools. And you probably know that there are hundreds of thousands of free and premium blogging tools on the web that lets you streamline your research, writing, and publishing process. Over the past several months I have published a variety of tools lists: Productivity Tools 101Social Media Tools 101Internet Marketing Tools 101Content Marketing Tools 101Search Engine Optimization Tools 101, etc. But today, I just want to focus on only one thing --- "Blogging". The idea is to list some of the best blogging tools out there. And the good thing..... most of them are free or freemium or at least comes with a free trial (there are exceptions too, btw). Also, you almost definitely won't need all the tools that are listed here but over time you will see yourself trying many of them (as they are all related in one way or the other). And that's why I have perfectly organized all of them into categories and subcategories --- to make the list easy to scan.

The Best Of The Best Blogging Tools — Curated!

A few years ago I tried to come up with a similar list, as a web directory for bloggers and marketers, but then I found it difficult to update as the list was not properly organized or categorized. And that's how I started working on this list. It's your ultimate blogging tools and resources (or at least I think so). However, it's very, very likely that I might have missed your favorite blogging tool as most of the tools that I have mentioned on this list are my personal favorites or something that I already knew existed.

30 Things I Absolutely Hate About Your Blog

I love your blog. I hate your blog. Whenever I visit a blog that I haven't come across before, I try to find out how different it is from others or what makes it interesting. Not just that. I also notice things that I don't like in it. Your blog might be very popular. But it wouldn't stop me from finding things I don't like. I can't stop myself from doing it. Over the past few months I started curating such a list in my Evernote and I'm sharing it here. And I believe most of them can be fixed (if you think it must be fixed) as none of them is technical in nature (if it's a technical problem then it's you who created it). But hey, it's just my personal view and hence there's a good chance that you would disagree with me --- with some or all of them. :D

Over 101 Handpicked Web 2.0 Sites To Get Instant Backlinks To Your Blog

Web 2.0

I previously wrote a blog post where I featured the top 30 social networks to drive traffic to your blog. It focused on traffic generation using social media and web 2.0 sites. So today I’m going to focus on link building using web 2.0 sites.

As you probably know, if content is King then links are Queen. Link building post penguin is all about quality so the traditional link building methods like article submission, directory submission, press releases, RSS submission, etc. rarely works today.

Don't Miss: 37 Content Discovery Tools To Find Great Social Media Content

So I’m featuring over 100 quality websites where you can list your blog/website. These websites may not drive huge traffic to your blog but they increase the backlinks to your blog in several ways.

Most of these websites allow you to enter your URL as a bio link and it means you get a backlink in less than 5 minutes (Tip: Use your Facebook/Twitter/Google+ account to sign up). And you can multiply the number of backlinks from these websites by becoming an active user.

For example, when you create your YouTube profile you can add a link to your website from your profile page and also from your uploaded videos.

Likewise, you can join community-driven websites like Digital Point, Microsoft Community, Yahoo Answers, etc. and can link to your website from profile pages and also from discussions by adding your link in a relevant topic.

Over 71 Ways To Repurpose Your Content Over And Over Again

Repurpose Content

First Published: November 17, 2016; Last Updated: Thursday, February 1, 2018.

You know, you should really repurpose your content. But the disclosure is that I haven't started it yet. I first came to know about repurposing content when Darren published How to Repurpose Your Content [and Why You Should Do It!]. However, I wasn't that interested as I didn't have plenty of blog posts on my blog then. Even today, I have less than 300 published blog posts but I realize that it's time to diversify the traffic sources. First things first. What is content repurposing? Content repurposing is all about extending the life of your original content (blog posts in most cases) by leveraging more mediums. Submitting a blog post to a dozen of social networks or updating/republishing one of your archived blog post is not exactly repurposing. It’s just sharing and resharing. Repurposing is done by taking an existing blog post (or content) and using it to create something else on another medium (in an easy to consume way) thereby reaching an audience who wouldn’t have found your content otherwise. That is, it involves reusing your own content to serve a different audience or the same audience in a different way. The good thing about content repurposing is that you are actually getting more traffic by creating less content — as these mediums are already known to have millions of active users.

Blogging is one of the most powerful modern marketing medium out there. The only problem is --- you cannot expect overnight success. Why? Because it's a marathon and not just a sprint! So, always go term!
"I've worked in marketing since 1987 and nothing I have used, studied or witnessed, comes close to the marketing power of an effective blog. Period." --- Jim Connolly
When I compiled the blog marketing resources I mentioned that I do not have a blog promotion strategy. Still, I wanted to share my blogging strategy with you and realized that it's better to publish  a new blog post. So, that's how I come up with this topic and it's all about how I increased my organic traffic from 250 to 1,500 to 3,000 without spending a penny.
