Freelance Writing Tips: Everything (Almost) You Need To Know

Freelance Writing Tips There are not enough freelance writers. Seriously. Whenever I come up with a freelance writing based topic, I  mention that it's extremely competitive. If there's a writing gig on a freelance writing marketplace such as Upwork.com (formerly oDesk.com), Fiverr.com, or elsewhere then there will be a ton of applicants --- even if it's just a micro-project. Today I have a perspective that contradicts the statement "freelance writing is extremely competitive". Over the past many months I have successfully failed to hire an affordable writer for this very blog --- no, It's not that I am going to make my blog multi-authored ---  I just happen to want to write and publish blog posts in a consistent way. You might already have noticed that neither do I write regularly nor do I focus on a single topic. I only write about things that I find interesting at that point of time. Therefore I don't have any plans to hire an army of content writers to publish 100s of blog posts a month --- like the Mashables and BuzzFeeds of the world are doing. I was just looking for someone --- preferably a contributor or an editor --- who could help me finish a blog post much faster. Because now I take several days to finish an in-depth or lengthy blog post (like this one). So I thought I could outsource the "writing" process and focus only on research and editing by myself --- to save a lot of my time and effort. And you know what happened? It never worked --- at least for me!

If you have been following my freelance topics then you probably know that I'm not a freelance writer myself --- but I wish I were one. However, as you can see I can write for myself but definitely not the way someone wants me to. And yet, I got a ton of writing opportunities in the past --- by way of guest blogging, SEO writing, web content, etc. and I was forced to deny all of it. :(

So what's the point?

Simple! You don't have to be a native English speaker or a best selling author to make money writing.

If you can write, then money can be made. Absolutely!

But no, that doesn't really mean that you can become a six-figure writer in few months/years just because you know how to write few sentences. It doesn't work that way at all!

The real questions are... Can you write quality content? Can you write content that meets the criteria or guidelines set by your client? Can you write error free (both grammatically and technically) content? If your answer is 'Yes' to all the above questions then you can become a successful freelance writer. Guaranteed!

Write Today; Monetize Tomorrow!

If you have just one reader and your blog changes their life your blog is big enough. — Darren Rowse A blog post by Jim Connolly inspired me to write this very blog post. In that blog post he mentioned about a best selling Kickstarter book written by the awesomest Seth Godin. When people said it took Seth 3 hours to write that book Seth said it took him around 8 years. Yes!
That’s how long it took him, writing blog posts almost every day, to build a big enough community to reach his Kickstarter target in 3 hours.
You know what? It applies to blogging as well.

11 Blogging Years. 11 Blogging Lessons. 11 Blogging Tips. Note: This blog post is an updated version of 7 Blogging Years. 7 Blogging Lessons. 7 Blogging Tips. (published 4 years and 100 blog posts ago). Yes, that's right! It's the 11th Blogoversary of Minterest. I started Minterest (maheshone.com) as a personal finance blog in 2006, and later in August 2007, I started blogging about "Money, Internet, Investing" (yes, that was the first tagline of Minterest and now it's --- tech. marketing. mashups.). To be honest it was literally "Just another WordPress site" and I was simply rehashing topics that were of "My interest". But there was one thing... I was learning. And the transition from Blogger.com to WordPress.org is simply amazing.

I started creating blogs on Blogger.com back in 2004 and was treating it like a simple publishing tool. I guess the reason why it didn't impress or motivate me much was its inability to customize things the way I wanted. When I tried WordPress I liked almost all of its aspects and found out that I liked coding as well. Oh yeah, I'm a software engineer by education but it is not the coding that inspired me --- it's the magic in "technology". Thanks to Microsoft. Coming back... I'm going to feature here 11 blogging lessons and tips that I have... learned, realized, or experienced in one way or the other over the past many, many years.

Blogging Tools 501 Bloggers can't live without tools! I mean, without their favorite blogging tools. And you probably know that there are hundreds of thousands of free and premium blogging tools on the web that lets you streamline your research, writing, and publishing process. Over the past several months I have published a variety of tools lists: Productivity Tools 101Social Media Tools 101Internet Marketing Tools 101Content Marketing Tools 101Search Engine Optimization Tools 101, etc. But today, I just want to focus on only one thing --- "Blogging". The idea is to list some of the best blogging tools out there. And the good thing..... most of them are free or freemium or at least comes with a free trial (there are exceptions too, btw). Also, you almost definitely won't need all the tools that are listed here but over time you will see yourself trying many of them (as they are all related in one way or the other). And that's why I have perfectly organized all of them into categories and subcategories --- to make the list easy to scan.

The Best Of The Best Blogging Tools — Curated!

A few years ago I tried to come up with a similar list, as a web directory for bloggers and marketers, but then I found it difficult to update as the list was not properly organized or categorized. And that's how I started working on this list. It's your ultimate blogging tools and resources (or at least I think so). However, it's very, very likely that I might have missed your favorite blogging tool as most of the tools that I have mentioned on this list are my personal favorites or something that I already knew existed.
